Treatment

A variety of new technologies, such as ultrasonic scalers and topical anesthetics applied without needles, make the treatment of periodontal disease more thorough and comfortable than ever. We can apply antibiotics directly to the gums to kill bacteria that cause the disease. In short, periodontal disease is treatable, even at an advanced stage, to help you keep your teeth and improve your health.

Ultrasonic Scaling

Periodontal disease presents itself as a build up of bacteria in pockets that form between gums and teeth. One of the first steps in cleaning and healing your gums is removal of the buildup with an ultrasonic scaler. The scaler has a very small scaling tip that produces a soft ultrasonic vibration. These ultrasonic vibrations, combined with a gentle jet of water, provide us with an innovative, gentle and ultra-effective method of removing calculus and harmful bacteria from below the gum line.

Oraqix® Topical Anesthetic

Oraqix® is the first and only anesthetic of its kind. It is a completely needle-free anesthesia developed specifically to administer prior to periodontal procedures. A numbing agent is gently inserted in the gingival margins around teeth, allowing patients to experience needle-free and pain-free, deep cleaning procedures.

Antibiotics

If we detect periodontal infection, we will apply the antibiotic solution Arestin® directly into the pocket, after scaling and planing, to promote healing. We might also prescribe a course of oral antibiotics to further combat the infection. Once the source of infection has been removed, your gums will begin to heal and tighten around teeth.

Home Therapies

Good oral hygiene is important. You should brush at least two to three times a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush or a Sonicare Electric Toothbrush, a revolutionary toothbrush that removes nearly twice as much plaque between teeth as a manual toothbrush. Sonicare can even reverse gingivitis and shrink periodontal pockets!

Daily flossing, prescription-strength fluoride toothpastes, fluoride rinses, and an oral irrigator also are important. We may recommend various rinses, such as the series of CariFree antibacterial mouth rinses to reduce bacterial levels on your teeth and give you a better chance of avoiding dental decay.

These preventive measures in combination with your in-office treatment should have your mouth restored to health in no time!
